Environmental Management Courses in South Africa

The Environment management course will challenge students to understand the importance of integrating across disciplines and seeing how the complexity of environmental issues demands using multiple methods to understand and address human-environment interactions. The course will also attempt to foster critical thinking about how to analyze and address a range of environmental issues where there are conflicting interests, uncertain knowledge, and unequal capacity for understanding and managing problems.

Course objectives:
This course is designed to provide one with a broad survey of theoretical lenses, analytic tools and topical areas for understanding environmental management in practice, the interaction between science and policy dimensions of environmental issues. The fundamental goal is to challenge students to understand the importance of integrating across disciplines and seeing how the complexity of environmental issues demands using multiple methods to understand and address human environment interactions.

Course content:

  • Introduction to Environmental Management: Why, How, What, Who; Legislative Background to Environmental Management: e.g. Constitutional Setting, NEMA, Water Act;
  • Environmental Impact Assessment: Integrated Environmental Management Procedure; Strategic Environmental Assessment: Setting the stage for Environmental Management,
  • Environmental Management and Decision Making; Introduction to Environmental Management Tools; Integrated Pollution Control; Integrated Wastewater Management;3 tier approach to EM; Environmental Management Systems: ISO, OTHERS; Environmental Planning – e.g. IDP’s; Tools for Environmental Management; Reporting Inventories, Monitoring, Auditing, LCA, Accounting, Funding, Integrated Approaches/Tools, Environmental Risk Assessment, Environmental Innovation; Public Involvement in Environmental Management; Stakeholder Participation; EM Instruments; Exposure Analysis

When completed, the student will be able to:

  • Explain key biophysical processes and environmental/ resource problems facing developing countries.
  • Discuss the need for their rational management and articulate the role of human pressures in disrupting these processes and their ecological and resource consequences.
  • Examine the key issues, concepts, analytical tools and techniques involved in the management of the environmental resource base in developing countries.
  • Evaluate the benefits and limitations of these various tools and techniques.
  • Solve a practical environmental management problem of interest

Dates:
18 – 22 June 2012

This course can be taken as part of a formal Wits qualification or as a short course. Short course participants have the choice of doing either a Certificate of Attendance (no assessment) or a Certificate of Competence (if the University’s assessment requirements have been met).
